How it's made
Mature palmyra fronds are cut, sun-dried until pliable and split into even strips. Some strips are dyed in bright colours. Weavers work the strips in over-and-under patterns, folding and tucking the ends so the object holds its shape without glue or stitching.
Skilled makers produce lidded boxes with tight-fitting covers, fine mats and small animal figures, all from a single material and with no tools beyond a knife.
