    Madurai Chithirai Festival

    When: April/May

The Chithirai Festival is Madurai's biggest annual event, filling the streets around the Meenakshi Amman Temple for around a fortnight in April and May. It combines two celebrations: the coronation and celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar, and the journey of Lord Kallazhagar from Azhagar Kovil to the Vaigai river. Millions of people gather for the processions.

    When

    Tamil month of Chithirai (April–May)

    Where

Meenakshi Amman Temple and the streets of Madurai

    Duration

    About 15 days

    Main highlight

The celestial wedding and Kallazhagar entering the Vaigai river

    What happens during the festival

The first week centres on the coronation of Meenakshi as ruler of Madurai and her symbolic conquest of the eight directions. The wedding, or Thirukalyanam, is the emotional peak, performed with full temple ritual and watched by enormous crowds. Days later, the great temple car procession rolls through the four Masi streets.

    Rituals and performances

Lord Kallazhagar sets out from Azhagar Kovil, about 20 kilometres away, in a golden-horse vahana and travels through the night to reach the Vaigai river bed, where he enters the water. Nadaswaram and thavil ensembles, classical dance, folk drumming and decorated deity chariots fill the streets. Free food halls and temporary shelters are set up along the routes.

    How and where to attend

Madurai is well connected by air, rail and road. The wedding day and the Vaigai river event draw the largest crowds — arrive several hours early and expect road closures around the temple. Rooftop viewing spots near the Masi streets are sought after. Book hotels at least a month in advance.

    Traveller Tips

    • Book accommodation in Madurai a month or more ahead; the city fills completely.
    • Expect extreme heat in April and May — carry water and avoid the midday sun.
    • Roads around the temple close during processions; walk rather than hire a vehicle.
    • The Vaigai river event happens at dawn, so plan for a very early start.
