What happens during the festival
The first day, Bhogi, is for discarding old belongings and lighting bonfires. The second day is Thai Pongal, when sweet pongal is cooked outdoors in a new clay pot and offered to the sun. The third day, Mattu Pongal, honours cattle, which are bathed, painted and garlanded. The fourth day, Kaanum Pongal, is for family outings, beaches and temple visits.
