How it is drawn
The ground is swept and sprinkled with water. A grid of dots, called pulli, is laid out, and the pattern is drawn by looping continuous lines around them, or by joining them into geometric shapes. The powder is released in a steady stream between thumb and forefinger, and the whole design is completed freehand without lifting or measuring.
Sikku kolam, the interlaced form, uses a single unbroken line that weaves around every dot and returns to its start.
