How it's made
The body is shaped in clay or built up from layers of paper pulp over a mould, then dried and hardened. The head and torso are made as separate pieces balanced on a rounded, weighted base so that the slightest touch sets them nodding. The surfaces are smoothed, primed and hand-painted with detailed costume and jewellery.
Larger pairs of dancing dolls are made in sets, and the balance of each piece has to be adjusted individually so the movement is smooth and long-lasting.
