How it's made
Seasoned timber is selected and squared, then the design is marked out and roughed with heavy gouges. Successive rounds of finer chisel work bring out figures, foliage and geometric borders, and undercutting creates depth. The finish is usually oil or wax rather than varnish, so the grain remains visible.
Temple chariot panels are carved as separate sections and assembled onto the chariot frame, allowing individual pieces to be replaced as they age.
