How it's made
The sculptor first models the figure in beeswax, working to proportions laid down in traditional treatises. The wax model is coated in successive layers of fine alluvial clay from the Cauvery and dried. The mould is heated so the wax runs out, and molten panchaloha metal is poured into the cavity.
Once cooled, the clay is broken away — each mould produces exactly one casting — and the surface is chiselled, filed and polished by hand. Fine details such as jewellery and facial features are cut into the metal at this stage.
