    Tanjore Paintings

Tanjore painting, or Thanjavur painting, is a classical South Indian art form that developed under Maratha patronage in Thanjavur from the sixteenth century onward. Its defining features are a raised gesso surface, 22-carat gold foil and inlaid glass or semi-precious stones, all set on a wooden plank base. The subjects are almost always devotional, with a serene, rounded central figure filling the frame.

    Origin district

    Thanjavur

    Materials

Jackwood or plywood base, cloth, chalk gesso, gold foil, glass stones, natural colours

    Typical uses

Home shrines, wall art, wedding and housewarming gifts

    Where to buy

Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Poompuhar emporiums statewide

    How it's made

A cloth is pasted onto a wooden plank and coated with a paste of chalk powder and gum, which is smoothed to a matte surface. The drawing is transferred, then the areas that will be gilded are built up in relief with gesso. Gold foil is laid over the raised work and pressed down, glass stones are set into the ornaments, and the remaining surface is painted in bright mineral and, today, acrylic colours.

A single piece can take several weeks. The gold foil, unlike paint, does not tarnish, which is why old Tanjore paintings retain their brilliance.

    History and heritage

The style grew out of the painting traditions of the Nayaka and Maratha courts of Thanjavur and absorbed influences from Deccani and European art. Krishna as a child, Rama, Lakshmi and Murugan are the most common subjects. Thanjavur painting holds a Geographical Indication tag, which protects the name for work produced in the region.

Where to see or buy it

Working studios in Thanjavur and Kumbakonam allow visitors to watch artists at work. The Thanjavur Art Gallery and the Saraswathi Mahal complex display historic examples. Poompuhar, the Tamil Nadu government handicrafts emporium, has outlets in Chennai and other cities that sell certified pieces.

    Traveller Tips

    • Ask whether the gold is genuine 22-carat foil or a gold-coloured substitute — the price difference is large.
    • Genuine pieces are heavy because of the wooden base; plan for careful packing.
    • Buying directly from a Thanjavur studio is usually better value than a city gallery.
    • Keep the painting away from direct sunlight and damp to preserve the gesso work.
